Current Volunteer Opportunities

Whether you're responding to disasters, providing first aid assistance at comunity events, teaching Health and Safety classes to the public, supporting our military service members and their families, or working behind the scenes, you can be sure that as an American Red Cross Volunteer, you will have a positive impact.

Front Desk Receptionist - Provide customer service to all visitors to the American Red Cross office.  Greeting visitors and directing them to the appropriate Red Cross staff.  Computer skills are helpful.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available.

 

First Aid Team - Our First Aid Team is one of the few Medically Licensed Red Cross First Aid Teams in the Country.  Started in 1937, the team provides emergency medical care at community events. University of Nebraska sports events, Lied Center and Pershing Center performances, and SaltDogs baseball games.  Successful completion of First Aid, CPR & AED classes required.  We provide the training.

 

Disaster Action Team (DAT) - Provide on-the-scene emergency assistance to those suffering from local disasters - usually fires. Emergency assistance includes food, shelter, emotional support and other emergency items - and when additional assistance is needed, Red Cross DAT Team members are able  to guide families to other resources in the community.  Training for DAT volunteers is provided at the Cornhusker Chapter. 

  

Disaster Relief Operations - Assist at larger local and national disasters where emergency shelters are set up in community facilities. Many different assignments are available, such as shelter operations, feeding, damage assessment, gathering and moving supplies, collaborating with government and other agencies, and public information. Training is provided at the Cornhusker Chapter.

  

Disaster Mental Health - Licensed mental health professionals provide support, screening and crisis counseling to local and national disaster clients and workers. Some work can be done by telephone. A current license in social work, psychiatry, psychology, or marriage and family counseling is required. 

 

Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) - Our AFES volunteers perform a variedy of tasks including making presentations to service personnel and their families throughout the year about Red Cross services for military families.

 

Health & Safety - From teaching First Aid, to helping prepare classrooms and supplies, to  maintaining volunteer student records.  Our Health and Safety volunteers are trained to assist the Cornhusker Chapter in the delivery of classroom instruction to other Red Cross Volunteers, local businesses, government agencies, and community groups and organizations.

 

Office Assistance - Provide in-office clerical, filing and telephone support.  Assist with maintaing volunteer student records, bulk mailings, and help with special projects and events.  Hours are flexible. Prior office experience is preferred and computer skills are helpful.
